11-20清华大学林志杰副教授:Entry Decisions, Positioning Strategies, and Sales Outcomes of Sharing Economy Providers

  The sharing economy has emerged and expanded dramatically in recent years in industries such as transportation, accommodation, and food. While academicians have focused on investigating economic and societal effects of sharing markets, they have neglected the equally important issues regarding the entry decisions, positioning strategies and sales outcomes of providers in the sharing economy. To fill this gap in the literature, we analyze a rich and proprietary dataset provided by a platform that facilitates home-cooked food sharing, and obtain several notable findings. First, providers with an interest towards the sharing activity are more likely to enter the market sooner, while economic disincentive of competition may not defuse entry decisions. Second, providers with an interest towards the sharing activity, compared to those without such an interest, tend to cater widely to common tastes by serving dishes that are also served by other providers (imitation), and create new dishes (innovation). Lastly, both imitation and innovation will increase providers’ sales in the market. These findings enrich the limited sharing economy literature by offering empirical insights on the nature of sharing economy markets.


  林志杰博士,清华大学经济管理学院管理科学与工程系副教授、中国信息经济学会理事会理事、中国信息经济学会青工委主任、中国信息经济学乌家培奖获得者。曾任南京大学商学院营销与电子商务系副教授,入选南京大学“登峰人才支持计划”。他从新加坡国立大学获得信息系统专业博士学位。他的研究兴趣包括信息系统经济学、共享经济、电子商务、社交媒体等,研究论文发表于MIS Quarterly、Information Systems Research、Journal of Management Information Systems、Research Policy等。他获得了南京大学商学院的2015年院长特别奖、2017年本科教学奖,以及中国信息经济学会所颁发的中国信息经济学2011-2015青年创新奖、2016青年创新奖、2017青年创新奖、2019优秀成果奖。
