Big data leaves no sector untouched as it continues to change the way we think about everything from sales to human resources, medicine and healthcare, as well as artificial intelligence. Yet, having big data does not automatically lead to better decision making. The key is to be able to handle data efficiently, something often referred to as data management recently. Historically, Bioinformatics has a 10-years head start compared to many other domains, given the assembly and dissemination of the first Human Genome back in the year 2001. Many problems which occur nowadays when dealing with big data, Bioinformaticians have often solved already. This presentation gives an overview on the ever-increasing volume, velocity, variety, variability and complexity of information, with a focus on Bioinformatics. It is emphasized that methods developed in the field, particularly data compression, should be used as boilerplates and transferred to other research domains, in order to deal with increasing data management challenges.
Sebastian Wandelt，北京航空航天大学电子信息工程学院教授，博士生导师，2016年入选北京航空航天大学“卓越百人”人才计划，2017年入选中组部第十三批“千人计划青年项目”。研究方向主要包括大数据压缩与索引算法、大规模系统优化算法、计算机与交通领域交叉学科等的研究。共计发表IEEE T INTELL TRANSP, IEEE ACM T COMPUT BI, TRANSPORT RES E-LOG 等论文70余篇。获得国际会议最佳论文奖4次。主持国家自然科学基金外国青年学者专项。
